Yoga in India for Beginners: What to Know Before You Visit

By Yogishri ·

Studying yoga in India can be a remarkable experience, and it is worth a little preparation — especially if you are new to practice.

Start before you travel

A few weeks of regular practice at home makes the first days far easier. Even fifteen minutes a day of simple postures and breathing builds familiarity. Live online classes are one way to begin with a teacher before you arrive.

Questions to ask a teacher or school

  • What does a typical day look like, and how many hours are spent in practice?
  • How large are the groups, and is individual correction given?
  • Is the program suitable for complete beginners?
  • If a certificate is offered, who issues it and what does it represent?
  • What are the cancellation and refund terms?

Look after your health

Tell your teacher about injuries or health conditions before you begin, and move within your limits. Yoga supports well-being, but it is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

Keep it simple

Beginners often try to do too much. Regular, unhurried practice — with attention to the breath — matters more than advanced postures.
