What Is the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra?
By Yogishri ·
The Vigyan Bhairav Tantra (Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra) is a short Sanskrit text that has become one of the best-known works on meditation from the tantric traditions of India.
A dialogue
The text takes the form of a conversation. The goddess, Bhairavi, asks about the true nature of reality; Bhairava — a form of Shiva — replies not with theory but with a series of practices through which that reality can be directly known.
The techniques
Tradition commonly counts 112 methods of meditation (dharanas). They work through many doorways of experience:
- Breath — attention to the pause between inhalation and exhalation.
- Sound — mantra, and listening to sound as it fades into silence.
- Space — contemplating emptiness and openness.
- Sensation and emotion — resting awareness in intense or subtle feeling.
- Everyday moments — the instant of waking, the start of a sneeze, the taste of food.
Its place in the tradition
The text is closely associated with the Shaiva traditions of Kashmir, where it was studied and commented on. Its appeal today lies in its directness: many of its techniques take only a moment and can be woven into ordinary life.
Approaching the practices
Because the methods are brief and subtle, they are easy to misunderstand when read alone. Studying them with a teacher helps you choose techniques that suit you and practice them with the right attitude.
