Summary

To understand Samkhya, Yogi Shri starts with the second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, where its teaching begins. Arjuna stands for the individual mind, and Krishna for universal consciousness; every one of us is an Arjuna.

The first disturbance of Arjuna’s mind is shoka — grief — which no English word quite captures. It arises around the values by which he has lived his whole life, principles he would not give up even at the cost of a kingdom. Until that context becomes our own, the Gita means little to us.

That is also why these verses are not understood by analysis alone, however learned we are in Sanskrit or English. In the tradition, the sutras are not forced open; they reveal their meaning as we live.

Key points

  • Samkhya’s teaching in the Gita begins in chapter two.
  • Arjuna is the individual mind; Krishna, universal consciousness.
  • Arjuna’s grief arises around his deepest values.
  • The Gita is understood by living it, not by analysis alone.
