Yoga Philosophy

Samkhya, the Bhagavad Gita and the roots of yogic thought.

Yoga philosophy gives the practice its map. Samkhya describes the distinction between awareness (purusha) and nature (prakriti); the Yoga Sutras set out the method; the Bhagavad Gita shows how the path is lived in action.

Foundations

  • Samkhya — the classical analysis of purusha and prakriti, associated with the sage Kapila (Kapil Muni).
  • Yoga Sutras — the eight-limbed path and the stilling of the mind.
  • Bhagavad Gita — karma, bhakti and jnana as ways of practice.
  • Kaivalya — the aim of freedom described across these texts.

How Yogi Shri teaches it

In Yogi Shri’s classes, yoga philosophy is taught the way every session is taught: an interactive exploration of the subject, followed by a practice, then time to share experience and receive personal guidance. The classical texts — the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras, the Upanishads and the tantric scriptures — are studied for what they mean in daily practice.

Frequently asked questions

Why study philosophy if I just want to practice?

Philosophy is the map for the practice: it explains what the techniques are for and keeps practice from becoming mechanical.

Which texts are covered?

Samkhya (associated with Kapil Muni), the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, studied for their application in daily life.

Are the courses in English or Hindi?

Both are offered. For example, Samkhya Yoga is in English and Kapil Muni & Lord Krishna is taught mainly in Hindi.
