Practice, study and rest at the foothills of the Himalaya.

A retreat gives practice the time it needs. For a few days, ordinary demands are set aside and each day is built around asana, pranayama, meditation, study and rest. In Rishikesh — where the Ganga meets the Himalayan foothills — the setting supports the work. Retreats are led by Yogi Shri G. Niranjan of Sanatan Yoga Vidya Kendra.

A typical retreat day

  • Early morning — asana and pranayama.
  • Morning — meditation, followed by study of the teachings.
  • Afternoon — rest, silence or quiet personal practice.
  • Evening — meditation, sharing and guidance.

Past retreats have also included sound practice and creative, color-based practice. The exact programme is published for each retreat.

Who a retreat is for

  • Practitioners who want to deepen a practice they have already begun.
  • Sincere beginners who want a guided, immersive start.
  • Yoga and meditation teachers who want time for their own practice.
  • Anyone who wants a meditation or spiritual retreat rooted in tradition rather than a holiday with some yoga.

Yoga retreat or meditation retreat?

Both. Each retreat combines movement, breath and sitting practice, because in the traditional view they belong together: asana and pranayama prepare the body and mind for meditation, and meditation gives meaning to the physical practice. The balance can shift from retreat to retreat, and each announcement states the focus.

How to prepare

  • Keep a short daily practice for a few weeks beforehand — the guided practices are a good start.
  • Bring comfortable clothing, a shawl for early mornings and a refillable water bottle.
  • Tell us about any health condition when you enquire.
  • Read the guide for international visitors if you are travelling from abroad.

Dates, fees and booking

Dates, accommodation, what is included and the fee are published for each retreat when it is announced, and confirmed in writing before any payment. Register your interest and we will write to you as soon as the next retreat is scheduled. See all retreats.

Before or after your retreat

Join the live online classes to prepare with the same teacher, and continue afterwards so the practice does not end when you leave Rishikesh.
