Rishikesh for Yoga: A Guide for International Visitors
By Yogishri ·
Rishikesh sits in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India, where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills for the plains. For generations it has drawn people who want to study yoga and meditation close to the traditions that shaped them. This guide covers the practical side of a first visit.
Getting to Rishikesh
- By air: the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun, a short drive from Rishikesh. Most international travelers connect through Delhi.
- By rail: Haridwar, about 25 km away, is the main railway junction; Rishikesh also has its own station with a smaller number of trains.
- By road: Delhi to Rishikesh is roughly 240 km. Allow six to seven hours by car or bus, more at busy times.
Before you travel
- Check the current Indian visa rules for your nationality well in advance; many visitors are eligible for an e-Visa.
- Arrange travel insurance that covers medical care.
- If you have a health condition, speak with your doctor before a period of intensive practice.
What to bring
- Loose, modest clothing for practice and for visiting temples and ashrams.
- A shawl or warm layer for early mornings — mornings can be cool even in warmer months.
- A refillable water bottle and any personal medicines.
- Your own mat if you prefer, although most places provide one.
Practicing respectfully
Rishikesh is a place of pilgrimage as well as practice. The town is traditionally vegetarian, and modest dress and quiet behavior are appreciated at temples, ghats and ashrams. Remove your shoes where others do, and ask before photographing people or ceremonies such as the evening Ganga aarti.
Choosing where to practice
Look for a teacher whose approach you understand before you arrive. Ask what a typical day looks like, how large groups are, and what any certificate actually represents. A short online class before you travel is a good way to get a feel for a teacher.
