Summary
Yogi Shri goes back to the moment when Maharshi Patanjali wrote atha yoga anushasanam — “now, the discipline of yoga” — and asks why he began exactly there, with the mind and its modifications, and gave no definition of consciousness itself.
He answers from Samkhya, a school that, he says, never compromises its search for truth, even at the cost of being called atheistic, and so can open Patanjali’s reasoning thread by thread. Of the countless kinds of union one could speak of, Patanjali chose to begin from the relationship between consciousness and the mind.
Guru Gorakhnath saw that this starting point was out of reach for most people, and began instead from consciousness in relation to the senses and the body. In doing so he built a bridge from hatha yoga to raja yoga — a systematic ladder by which anyone can climb, so that Patanjali’s teaching becomes usable.
Key points
- Patanjali begins with the mind, not with a definition of consciousness.
- Samkhya examines the reasoning behind the Yoga Sutras.
- Gorakhnath began from the body and senses instead.
